What is sexual harassment at the workplace?

Sexual harassment at the workplace is defined as any act or statement of a sexual nature that degrades a person onthe basis of their gender and is unwanted by that person. The decisive factor is not the intention of the person taking such action, but how this behavior is received by the person affected. Unlike bullying, even a single act can qualify as sexual harassment.

Examples of sexual harassment are:

  • Lewd and embarrassing remarks or looks
  • Sexist sayings and jokes,whistling
  • Unwanted physical contact
  • Displaying, posting or mailing pornographic material
